New Thai bistro comes to Midland

A new restaurant open in Midland offers diners a taste of something new; northern Thai cuisine with a homey style.

The Basil Thai Bistro is owned by Hugh Miller, and it's definitely a family affair, as the recipes not only derive from his Thai family's style of cooking at home, but several family members also contributed restaurant experience, cooking and décor to making the bistro a success.

Miller recently retired from the Dow Chemical Co. and had a longtime dream of opening a Thai restaurant that offered something a little different from the typical Thai food found in the United States, which usually are based around southern Thai cuisine. Instead, the recipes at Basil Thai Bistro hit on notes like basil, cilantro, chili and lemongrass.

The bistro serves a wide variety of appetizers, stir-fries, entrees, soups, curries and drinks, including popular tapioca smoothies, sometimes called bubble tea, with tapioca beads.

Basil Thai Bistro is at 225 West Wackerly Street, in Wackerly Square. It's open from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday. On Friday and Saturday, the hours are from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and from 4:30 to 10 p.m.
